Hydro-jetting is a new tool in the plumber’s arsenal. It has rapidly proven itself in the field to be one of the most effective ways to clean out a pipe, if not the best. But what is it, and what makes it so special? Allow Almighty Rooter Sewer & Plumbing, a leading sewer cleaning company in the Chicago area, to explain.
Put simply, extremely high-pressure water (as much as 4,000 psi) is pumped through a flexible water line threaded through the piping to a specially designed head that fires the water out in razor-like jets, annihilating all blockages. This can be done for anything from small home drains to municipal sewers.
A severe drain or sewer blockage (such as tree roots or a clump of hair and grease) used to mean snaking the pipes using a mechanical router. While this still works very well, it can damage fragile, aging pipes and may not always completely remove the cause of the clog: it does not clean the pipe, it only breaks up the existing clog.
This is where hydro-jetting differs. Hydro-jetting not only breaks up the clog but completely cleans out the piping in a way that no other method can. A complete clog is typically preceded by a buildup of sludge in the pipes. Usually, it is nigh impossible to remove this without replacing the pipes. The nozzle typically has a forward-facing jet, for destroying the blockage, and several aft-facing jets to thoroughly pressure-clean and scour the walls of the pipe, removing all built-up sludge, and pushes the removed sludge out of the pipe. In addition, not only does it thoroughly clean the piping without damaging it, but it is more economical, environmentally friendly and highly versatile as well. It should, however, be performed by a professional plumbing and sewer cleaning company, such as Almighty Rooter Sewer & Plumbing.
Prior to jetting the pipes, a visual inspection must generally be conducted using a small fiber optic camera. This is done to check for any cracks or damaged piping and to identify the nature of the clog, which allows the plumber to select an appropriate head and operating pressure for the job. Almighty Rooter Sewer & Plumbing will even perform the camera inspection, valued at $250, for free with any sewer rodding or jetting service.
